Green Street School is a public elementary school (K-6) in Brattleboro, Vermont. We started a school garden in the fall of 2006. The garden provides an outdoor learning center for the entire school and is integrated throughout the fourth grade curriculum. This year our school has been partnered with an elementary school in Pardieu, Haiti which also has a school garden. This partnership offers us many exciting ways to learn about ourselves as part of a larger global community.
The goals of the garden project are: • To further the academic curriculum through hands-on gardening experiences • To promote healthy eating habits & nutrition through growing and preparing food • To connect students to the food they eat and where it comes from. • To teach students useful skills of cooking and gardening • To expose students to and educate them about the environment and natural cycles and to foster a sense of caring for the earth • To foster a sense of community through cooperative activities among students of the same grade level, across grade levels and with members of the school and town community • To involve parents in the life of the school • To beautify the school grounds & create an outdoor classroom for a variety of uses. • To make learning fun!
